PBNU launches 'My Pesantren is Safe' movement to protect students

The central board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) has launched a movement called "Pesantrenku Aman" (My Pesantren is Safe) to strengthen the protection of students at Islamic boarding schools. The initiative, declared alongside religious leaders in Tangerang Regency, aims to foster an educational environment free from violence and discrimination.

KH Miftah Faqih, PBNU's Chairman for Organization, Cadre, and Membership, stated that this movement is crucial for ensuring students' basic rights while they study. The concept of a safe and comfortable pesantren has been redefined to be more comprehensive. It now includes not only freedom from physical threats but also a sense of security during the learning process, smooth knowledge transfer from teachers, and open access to proper education. "Because a sense of security is a basic human right. With a sense of security, students can explore their potential optimally, of course, while still based on a sense of responsibility and clear boundaries," said Kiai Miftah.

Kiai Miftah also highlighted the need to re-evaluate the relationship between teachers and students in the digital age, noting that traditional methods of discipline may no longer be relevant. He suggested that the current era of information flow requires pesantren to adapt and move away from disciplinary methods that could lead to psychological or physical violence.
