PDP: Turaki camp meets Jonathan

Nigeria's opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has initiated high-level consultations to navigate its lingering leadership dispute. An interim National Working Committee, led by Chairman Kabiru Turaki, met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.

The closed-door meeting, held at Jonathan's residence, focused on the ramifications of a Federal High Court judgment. The court had dismissed a lawsuit filed by the party's Board of Trustees, which sought official recognition for Turaki's interim committee.

The discussion was essentially on the implications of the judgment. The delegation briefed the former president on the outcome of the case and sought his views on the way forward for the party.

Justice Salim Ibrahim struck out the suit, citing a lack of legal standing for the plaintiffs and the court's lack of jurisdiction. He noted that the case attempted to reopen settled issues and that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had already recognized a rival leadership produced at a PDP convention.

Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that the PDP delegation briefed Jonathan on the court's decision and sought his counsel on the party's path forward. This consultation occurs at a critical juncture as the PDP endeavors to stabilize its leadership and prepare for upcoming electoral engagements.
