Peace bell rings over Quang Tri as festival opens

The Peace Festival 2026 officially commenced at the Hien Luong-Ben Hai special national relic site in Quang Tri province, Vietnam, with the resonant sound of a peace bell echoing across the former Demilitarized Zone. This event marks a significant moment, sending a powerful message of peace, reconciliation, and hope for the future.

Organized by the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee, the festival's opening ceremony featured a special art program titled "From Memory to Future: Quang Tri for Peace." The event was broadcast live on VTV1 and attended by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang, leaders from central ministries and agencies, provincial officials, national heroes, ambassadors, and international representatives, alongside a large number of residents and tourists.

Quang Tri Chairman Le Hong Vinh noted that the festival takes place during the solemn month of July, leading up to Vietnam's Day of Remembrance for Martyrs and Fallen Soldiers. He described Quang Tri not just as a geographical location but as a sacred memory of fierce wartime struggles. However, he emphasized that the province's true value today lies in its power of revival, with peace shaping a new identity for a region that endured immense loss.

"The story of Quang Tri is not just the story of a land, but also the story of Vietnam, a nation written with patriotism, indomitable will, the aspiration for peace, humanity, and the tradition of reconciliation," Vinh stated. He defined peace not merely as the absence of war but as the presence of justice, tolerance, mutual respect, and the ability to overcome differences for cooperation and development. Deputy Prime Minister Thang praised Quang Tri's initiative, calling it a national cultural event with growing international reach, symbolizing Vietnam's peace-loving nature.
