Pearly-Thinaah Advance as Sole Malaysian Representatives to China Open Quarterfinals

Malaysia's top women's doubles pair, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, are the last remaining Malaysian representatives at the China Open badminton championship. They secured their spot in the quarterfinals by defeating Ukraine's young duo, Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr, in a decisive straight-games victory.

The world No. 5 pairing needed just 30 minutes to overcome their Ukrainian opponents, winning 21-19, 21-12 in the round of 16. Their next challenge will be a formidable one against Japan's formidable pair, Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto, who are ranked third in the world.

Historically, Tan and Thinaah have a slight edge over Fukushima and Matsumoto, leading their head-to-head record with five wins out of nine encounters. However, the Japanese pair has dominated their recent meetings, winning the last three matches, including a semi-final clash at the India Open in January. This upcoming match is particularly significant as it marks the first encounter between the two pairs since Tan's recovery from a back injury.

Tan has recently admitted to being at only 70-80% of her usual fitness level, indicating that a full recovery is still in progress. Despite this, she expressed gratitude for her partner Thinaah's support, stating that Thinaah's ability to cover for her allows her to play more freely on court. The duo's progression to the quarterfinals comes after seven other Malaysian teams, including four men's doubles pairs, two mixed doubles pairs, and one men's singles player, were eliminated earlier in the day.
