Pedro Sánchez sends 'NEW Party' letter to Özgür Özel: 'Your brave decision gives us hope'

Pedro Sánchez, President of the Socialist International and Prime Minister of Spain, has voiced his support for Özgür Özel, who recently became the founding leader of Turkey's newly formed Yeni Parti after separating from the Republican People's Party (CHP).

In a written statement, Sánchez highlighted the Socialist International's close observation and solidarity with Özel's efforts in advocating for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. He acknowledged the significant challenges Özel and his party have faced, including the imprisonment of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the detention of other elected mayors, and the invalidation of past congress decisions through what was described as "Absolute Nullity."

Sánchez recognized the difficulty of Özel's decision to continue his struggle by establishing the Yeni Parti, driven by the demands of the grassroots and elected representatives. Sánchez believes Özel correctly identified the moment as opportune for such a move, especially when fundamental principles are being violated.
