Penghu drowning: Fisherman falls into sea, rescued after losing consciousness

A man fishing in Penghu, Taiwan, was rescued after falling into the sea and losing consciousness, according to reports from Liberty Times. The incident occurred on August 14, during the seventh month of the lunar calendar, a period traditionally associated with superstitions about water activities.

The fisherman, identified by the surname Lin, was reportedly fishing in the intertidal zone near the Erkan cage aquaculture area in Xiyu Township. At approximately 5:05 PM, a distress call was received by the Zhugang Coast Guard Station. Upon arrival, rescuers found that Lin had already been pulled ashore by bystanders who had initiated CPR.

Coast guard personnel took over the resuscitation efforts, performing chest compressions until the Xiyu Fire Department and ambulance arrived at 5:13 PM. The man had lost vital signs at the time of rescue, but his family insisted on immediate hospitalization, hoping for a miracle. He was transported to the Penghu Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, where he regained a heartbeat and was subsequently moved to the intensive care unit for further observation.

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident. Initial reports suggest Lin may have experienced a sudden illness or fainted, leading to his fall into the water. The area is known for its fishing activities, especially during low tide, and Lin's fishing gear was left at the scene.
