Three Experienced Searchers Attacked by Hornets in Taiwan; One Rescued

A dangerous encounter with hornets has left three experienced search and rescue personnel injured while they were surveying an undeveloped area in Pingtung, Taiwan. The group, consisting of Ms. Chang (55), Mr. Zhang (69), and Mr. Yan (64), are all seasoned members of hiking and mountain rescue associations.

Search and rescue teams successfully made contact with Ms. Chang, who sustained non-severe injuries and is mobile. The location of one of the male victims has also been confirmed, though his identity is still being verified. However, rescue operations have been temporarily suspended due to rapidly worsening weather conditions and poor visibility in the mountainous terrain after nightfall.

Rescuers are planning to resume their efforts at first light on August 15th, aiming to locate and rescue the remaining individuals. The incident occurred in a restricted ecological protection zone within a national park. It was discovered that the three individuals had entered the area on August 12th, ahead of a scheduled ecological education activity on August 16th, and had not obtained the necessary permits for their early entry and exploration.

Authorities are reiterating the importance of adhering to regulations for entering ecological protection zones. These areas, unless specifically opened, are undeveloped and present significant risks from terrain and wildlife. Proper application and adherence to approved routes are mandatory to ensure personal safety. The incident highlights the dangers present in unmanaged natural environments, even for experienced individuals.
