Penghu wind power hearing canceled amid local opposition

A planned public hearing for a land-based wind power project in Xiyu, Penghu, Taiwan, was suddenly canceled on July 30, sparking concern and vigilance among local communities. The cancellation, officially cited as an effort "to avoid political manipulation," has been met with skepticism, as organizers indicated the meeting would be rescheduled.

Local opposition to wind power development in Penghu has been vocal and sustained. Xiyu Township Mayor Li Tian-jin has firmly stated his opposition to the installation of wind turbines, calling them "crazy power generation." He argues that the documentation from public hearings, including attendance records and promotional material, could be used by developers as evidence of local communication and participation to satisfy environmental and economic authorities.

Concerns extend beyond mere political maneuvering. Zhuang Guo-hui, vice chairman of the Magong City Council, questioned the justification for cancellation, asking if the widespread opposition since 2024 was merely "political manipulation." He stressed that residents' concerns are direct and deeply rooted in their desire to preserve their living environment.

Despite the cancellation, local stakeholders remain wary of the project's potential resurgence. Xu Jia-jun, a candidate for Penghu County Councilor, noted that postponing a meeting does not equate to halting the development. He stressed the need for transparency and thorough communication, allowing residents to understand the project's implications and voice their opinions effectively, rather than allowing the issue to be dismissed as political maneuvering.
