Pentagon Pledges $400 Million for Australian Rare Earth Mine

A remote Australian town is set to become a key hub for Western scandium supply, following a significant $400 million pledge from the U.S. Pentagon. Miner Sunrise Energy Metals announced the commitment, which will fund the construction of the world's first primary mine for scandium.

Scandium, a rare earth element essential for defense applications, aircraft manufacturing, and data centers, is currently dominated by China in terms of both supply and processing. The Pentagon's investment is a strategic move to diversify and secure the Western supply chain for this critical material. The proposed mine will be located in Syerston, near Fifield in New South Wales, an area known for its high concentrations of scandium.

Sunrise Energy Metals has already secured a deal with Lockheed Martin to supply 25 percent of its scandium output for the first five years of operation. The company is expected to make a formal announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange soon. This move underscores the growing geopolitical importance of rare earth minerals and the efforts by Western nations to build independent supply chains.
