People take to the streets: Hamburg demonstration for democracy and against the far right

A demonstration against right-wing extremism and in support of democracy will take place in central Hamburg on Saturday from 2 p.m., following the election in Saxony-Anhalt.

The event’s motto is “Time to act: Freedom must be defended! Together for humanity, fair social policy and a resilient democracy.” Demonstrations are also expected in more than 35 other cities, including Magdeburg, Dresden, Berlin and Munich.

Annika Rittmann of Zusammen gegen Rechts Hamburg said the international reaction to the election showed its importance amid the global rise of the right. She said the group wanted to create a place for people to express fear, anger or disappointment, stand in solidarity and demand appropriate responses from governments.

The demonstration is supported by the Hamburg pub choir and singer Bosse.
