Perth man charged over alleged car-smashing spree, police chase

Perth police have charged a 45-year-old man following a destructive 90-minute rampage across the city's northern suburbs, during which he allegedly damaged at least 20 vehicles. The incident began around midday on Saturday.

Authorities allege the man commenced his spree driving a Toyota Camry through suburbs including Mount Lawley, Perth, Inglewood, East Perth, South Perth, Carine, Madeley, and Duncraig. It is further alleged that he exited his vehicle at various points and used a metal pole to strike numerous parked or stationary cars, causing significant damage. Several people were reportedly inside their vehicles at the time, but fortunately, no injuries were sustained.

Following numerous public reports of the man's erratic behavior, police initiated a coordinated response. The suspect's vehicle was eventually spotted from the air in the northern suburbs. The man allegedly failed to stop for officers, leading them on a high-speed chase. During the pursuit, he is accused of driving recklessly and on the wrong side of the road.

The chase concluded when the vehicle came to a stop on Lilburne Road in Duncraig, where the man, a resident of Gosnells, was arrested. He was scheduled to appear in court on Saturday, facing a string of charges. These include criminal damage, being armed in a manner that could cause fear, and reckless driving to evade police pursuit.
