Peru Exceeds 600 Earthquakes in 2026, IGP Reports

The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) has reported that the country has recorded over 600 earthquakes so far in 2026. This milestone was reached following two seismic events in Arequipa and Lima.

The figure reflects the permanent seismic activity that characterizes Peruvian territory, located in one of the most seismically active areas on the planet due to the interaction of the Nazca and South American plates.

The latest tremor in Lima registered a magnitude of 3.4 with a depth of 48 kilometers, occurring 11 kilometers south of Chilca district in Cañete province. The Arequipa earthquake, recorded the previous evening, also had a magnitude of 3.4 and a depth of 15 kilometers, with its epicenter 21 kilometers southeast of Vítor in Arequipa province. These were the 601st and 602nd seismic events counted this year.

According to the IGP, this high frequency of earthquakes is characteristic of Peru's location on one of the planet's most seismically active zones. The country sits at the convergence of the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. However, the IGP clarifies that not all recorded events are felt by the population, and most are low-magnitude. Their perceived intensity depends on depth, distance from the epicenter, and local terrain.

The number of registered events, however, does not mean that all have been perceived by the population nor that they represent earthquakes of great magnitude.

Seismic activity is primarily concentrated in the regions of Ica, Arequipa, Lima, Junín, Ucayali, and Pasco. These areas experience frequent events due to their proximity to the subduction zone or the presence of active geological faults. The most impactful earthquakes this year were a magnitude 5.1 in Junín on July 18, which caused fatalities and damage, and a magnitude 7.2 in Ayacucho on August 20, resulting in injuries and structural damage.

The seismic activity is concentrated mainly in Ica, Arequipa, Lima, Junín, Ucayali, and Pasco.

The IGP urges the public to maintain a culture of prevention, develop family emergency plans, identify safe zones, and prepare emergency kits in anticipation of potentially larger earthquakes.
