Peru launches S/408 million road project to boost southern transport and logistics

Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), through Provías Descentralizado, announced the execution of the third component of the Arequipa-La Joya regional road. This significant infrastructure project involves constructing a new 20.5-kilometer stretch with an investment exceeding S/408.7 million. The work will be carried out using the "Obras por Impuestos" (Works for Taxes) mechanism, aiming to bolster connectivity and the southern logistics corridor of the country.

The announcement, made at the Government Palace, included President José María Balcázar, Minister of Transport and Communications Aldo Prieto Barrera, and Arequipa's regional governor Rohel Sánchez. This new segment is part of the comprehensive Arequipa-La Joya road project, which is being developed in stages. The first component, the 370-meter Virgen de Chapi bridge, was recently inaugurated by the Arequipa Regional Government. The second component, involving the construction of twin tunnels, has already commenced.

The third component will feature a dual-carriageway highway with a central median, berms, drainage systems, retaining walls, and other safety features adhering to established technical standards. The Consorcio Ejecutor Joya will undertake the construction, with financing provided by Provías Descentralizado. The MTC anticipates that this new road will significantly improve the connection between the Arequipa-La Joya route and the main logistics corridors in southern Peru, facilitating the movement of passengers and goods.

Furthermore, the infrastructure is expected to reduce travel times and logistical expenses, thereby stimulating productive, commercial, and service activities in the southern macro-region. Following the update of the technical file, construction is slated to begin, with a completion deadline of the first quarter of 2028. The project is projected to benefit more than 1.27 million residents of Arequipa.
