Peru Prosecutors Secure 785 Cybercrime Convictions With Help From TikTok, Roblox, Meta

Peruvian cybercrime prosecutors have achieved significant success, securing 785 convictions against individuals involved in various forms of cybercrime, with computer fraud being the most reported offense. The National Prosecutor's Office for Cybercrime highlighted the vital role of collaboration with digital platforms such as TikTok, Roblox, and Meta in advancing these investigations.

Aurora Castillo, national coordinator for Specialized Cybercrime Prosecutor's Offices, explained that many investigations begin without identified perpetrators. Accessing preserved information from digital service providers is often decisive in clarifying cases. She emphasized that these procedures strictly adhere to legal mechanisms and international cooperation protocols.

This information serves as crucial evidence in criminal proceedings. Authorities request data preservation to prevent its deletion while they work to identify alleged offenders.

Computer fraud accounts for the majority of the 785 convictions, but sentences have also been secured for identity theft, sexual propositions targeting minors, and other digital offenses. The Prosecutor's Office faces additional challenges from criminal organizations using cryptocurrencies to obscure financial transactions. Furthermore, specialized cybercrime units are currently limited to Lima, Trujillo, and Arequipa, restricting national coverage. The Public Ministry advocates for incorporating mechanisms from the Budapest Convention into Peru's legal system to expedite responses to cybercrime and preserve digital evidence effectively.
