Peru's Condorcanqui Reports 370 Sexual Violence Cases in 2026

An alert has been issued regarding a high number of sexual violence cases in Condorcanqui, Peru, with 370 incidents reported between January and July 2026, according to the Ombudsman's Office in the Amazonas region.

José Luis Oblitas, head of the Ombudsman's Office in Amazonas, stated that the figure was provided by the Awajún, Wampis, Umukai Yawi Women's Council (Comuawuy). This alert follows a recent denunciation of alleged sexual misconduct by military personnel against two teenage girls, aged 15 and 16, at a student residence in Nieva, Condorcanqui. "This alert demands that this case be investigated with severity and that it does not go unpunished," Oblitas affirmed.

Condorcanqui, a remote province in Amazonas, faces significant challenges due to a lack of basic services. Oblitas highlighted the absence of nearby health centers for immediate support to victims and the lack of police stations in the border area with Ecuador. The nearest police station is a two-to-three-day river journey away, and travel is often hindered by difficult weather conditions, posing risks to occupants.

These logistical hurdles mean that many incidents are investigated in Ecuador rather than Peru. The Provincial Prosecutor's Office specialized in Violence Against Women and Family Members in Condorcanqui has initiated a preliminary investigation into the recent allegations against two soldiers. The investigation includes urgent measures such as Gesell chamber testimonies and on-site inspections. Protective measures have also been requested for the affected adolescents.
