A cornerstone of this preparedness is the emergency backpack, a vital resource recommended for every home, office, and institution. This backpack is designed to hold essential supplies, enabling individuals to cope with the initial hours following an earthquake or other disaster, a period when basic services often fail and official assistance may be delayed.

Indeci outlines the essential components for an effective emergency backpack. These include non-perishable food items such as canned tuna, high-energy biscuits, and cereal bars; sufficient bottled water for at least one day per person; a flashlight with spare batteries; a portable radio for official updates; a whistle to signal for help if trapped; a comprehensive first-aid kit with antiseptics, bandages, painkillers, and personal medications; warm clothing and a light blanket; copies of personal documents like IDs and insurance papers stored in a waterproof bag; and cash in small denominations.

Special consideration should be given to vulnerable household members. For homes with children, the elderly, or individuals with special needs, the backpack should be adapted to include items like diapers, formula, or specific medications.
