Peru's President-Elect Fujimori Names Key Cabinet Ministers

President-elect Keiko Fujimori of Peru has begun assembling her incoming administration, appointing key figures to lead crucial ministries just days before her official inauguration. Luis Galarreta, Fujimori's vice president and a long-time ally, has been designated as the next chief of staff, tasked with leading a unified cabinet that works with urgency and responsiveness to citizens' needs.

Fujimori announced these initial appointments at a party headquarters in Lima, emphasizing that her government's success will be measured by its results. Galarreta, a former parliamentarian with decades of experience in Christian democracy before joining Fujimorismo in 2016, is expected to navigate the significant challenges awaiting the new government. These include addressing the country's pressing insecurity crisis, preparing for the potential impacts of the El Niño climate phenomenon, and overcoming the deep political instability that has led to eight different presidents in the past decade.

The role of foreign minister will be filled by Carlos Espa, a former television journalist and presidential candidate.

Fujimori is set to be sworn in on July 28, succeeding interim president José María Balcázar. Her term is scheduled to extend until 2031. The remaining ministers for her 19-ministry cabinet will be announced following the official handover of power.
