Peru: Suspect in Student's Femicide Subject to Preliminary Detention, Remains at Large

Peruvian authorities are intensifying their search for Cristian Francis Cruz Eusebio, a 40-year-old man wanted in connection with the alleged femicide of 31-year-old administration student Laura Huere Guerra. A preliminary seven-day detention order has been issued by the Second Specialized Transitory Investigation Court for Violence Against Women.

The suspect, however, remains a fugitive after evading capture when the National Police of Peru (PNP) attempted to execute the warrant at his residence. The judicial measure was authorized based on evidence linking Cruz Eusebio to Huere Guerra's death, which occurred on July 2 in the Ate district of Lima.

Initial clues emerged from a laptop found abandoned near where Huere Guerra's body was discovered. The device, registered under the user "Cris," was linked to the victim's ex-partner. The victim's family also found sentimental messages signed by "Cris" in her room. Further investigation uncovered WhatsApp Web conversations suggesting the relationship ended days before the murder due to jealousy and control issues. Security camera footage shows Huere Guerra returning computer parts to her ex-partner, after which a street argument and subsequent assault are believed to have taken place, leading to her death. Witnesses described an attacker matching the suspect's appearance and noted he may have sustained a hand injury during the attack.

Family members of Laura Huere have expressed frustration with the initial police response, stating they had to actively participate in gathering crucial information. They cited a lack of support in finding witnesses and obtaining data from electronic devices, urging authorities to accelerate the search for the suspect.
