Peru to install 83 modular domes for schools after Junín earthquake

Peru's Ministry of Education (Minedu) is set to deploy 83 temporary modular domes to serve as educational facilities in the Junín region, which was recently struck by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. This initiative aims to ensure the continuity of schooling for students affected by the disaster.

Initially, 20 educational institutions were reported damaged. However, subsequent technical inspections revealed that 44 schools sustained varying degrees of damage. Minedu announced that the first batch of 20 modular domes will be sent in the coming days. An additional 63 domes will be progressively installed as cleanup and site preparation work is completed.

The ministry's announcement comes after President Keiko Fujimori visited the affected region on July 31. The earthquake, which occurred on July 19, resulted in five fatalities, left 5,358 people displaced, and affected 4,130 individuals, according to the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci).

These modular domes are prefabricated, dome-shaped structures used by the National Program for School Infrastructure (Pronied) and Minedu as emergency temporary classrooms. They are designed to maintain educational services during natural disasters such as earthquakes or heavy rainfall, and have been previously used to protect students during threats like the El Niño Costero phenomenon.
