Peru to use $2.6 million in German aid for Amazon forest conservation

Peru's Ministry of Environment will use $2.6 million in German cooperation funds to bolster the conservation of 3.6 million hectares of Amazonian forests. The initiative will involve native communities in the Loreto and Ucayali regions.

The budgetary support agreement, financed by the German development bank KfW, is part of the "Financial Sustainability of Protected Areas of Peru – Phase I" project. The actions will take place in the El Sira Communal Reserve in Ucayali, and the Pacaya Samiria and Matsés national reserves in Loreto, as well as the Sierra del Divisor National Park, which spans both regions.

This agreement, approved by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, aims to strengthen conservation agreements and local participation mechanisms within these four protected natural areas. It seeks to create sustainable opportunities for local populations and encourage their involvement in biodiversity protection. The Ministry of Environment highlighted that the approval is based on the successful results achieved during the first phase of the budgetary support, implemented between 2021 and 2024.
