Peruvian federation upholds one-year ban for Argentine coach Melgarejo

The Peruvian Football Federation's Disciplinary Commission has confirmed a one-year ban for Cienciano coach Horacio Melgarejo. The Argentine manager's appeal against the suspension, imposed in July, was declared unfounded. Melgarejo is barred from participating in all competitions organized by the Peruvian Professional Football League for twelve months.

His suspension stems from insulting remarks made about the Copa de la Liga, a tournament parallel to the national Liga 1. Melgarejo called the competition "shit" after his team was eliminated on July 10. He later apologized to the FPF and tournament organizers, stating his comments were "not appropriate."

In addition to the ban, Melgarejo faces a fine of 110,000 soles (approximately $32,500). He expressed regret for his statements, arguing the punishment was disproportionate. Reports indicate Melgarejo plans to pursue his case with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS), enlisting the help of Spanish lawyer Juan de Dios Crespo.

Despite the domestic suspension, Melgarejo has continued to coach Cienciano in the Copa Sudamericana. The team notably eliminated defending champions Lanús of Argentina with a 4-0 victory on July 29, advancing to the round of 16. In league matches, the team is currently managed by assistant coach Cristian Ruggeri.
