Peruvian plane crash kills 13, including tourists, after reporting mechanical problems

A Cessna Grand Caravan operated by Aerodiana crashed near Nazca, Peru, killing all 13 people on board. The flight, which was carrying tourists from Spain, Italy, and Germany along with two Peruvian crew members, reportedly experienced mechanical issues before losing contact with air traffic control. The accident occurred on Saturday, shortly after the plane took off from Pisco airport with the intention of flying over the Nazca Lines.

Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Rogers Valencia, stated that the aircraft had communicated a mechanical problem to the tower before the crash. The Air Accidents Investigation Commission is now examining the flight's trajectory and the mechanical evidence from the wreckage to understand the cause. Valencia stressed the importance of a swift resolution for the sake of the families, the airline operator, and the aircraft manufacturer.

There was a call from the aircraft to indicate that it had mechanical problems, which is now under full investigation by the Air Accidents Investigation Commission.

Valencia met with the consuls of Italy and Germany in Nazca to express condolences for the seven Italian and two German tourists who perished. Two Spanish tourists also died in the incident. The minister assured that the Pisco airport is fully operational and that the airline company held the necessary certifications, though he acknowledged the need to determine responsibility.

Despite the tragic accident, Valencia emphasized that Peru remains a safe destination with established protocols for tourism operations. He highlighted the national challenge of revitalizing tourism and reaffirmed the country's commitment to safety. The Ministry of Transport and Communications confirmed that the aircraft reported an emergency situation near Socos before contact was lost.
