Peruvian President Congratulates New Colombian President De la Espriella

Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori extended congratulations to Abelardo de la Espriella upon his assumption of the Colombian presidency. Fujimori conveyed her best wishes for De la Espriella's success and expressed confidence in enhancing the friendship and cooperation between Peru and Colombia.

De la Espriella, a 48-year-old ultrarightist lawyer, was inaugurated for the 2026-2030 term during a ceremony in Cali. He succeeds the leftist Gustavo Petro. Notably, Petro's government did not send official representatives to Fujimori's inauguration in Peru on July 28. However, De la Espriella dispatched a delegation led by his vice president, José Manuel Restrepo, to the Peruvian ceremony.

During Fujimori's inauguration, she and Restrepo affirmed their governments' decision to fully restore diplomatic relations by appointing ambassadors to Lima and Bogotá. Relations had cooled in March 2023 when Peru recalled its ambassador due to Petro's remarks, which Peru deemed "interfering." Although both nations agreed to re-establish relations in March 2025, ambassadors have not yet been appointed.
