Peter Obi reflects on service at 65, donates ₦10m to rural hospital

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi marked his 65th birthday with a call for gratitude, reflection, and a renewed dedication to serving humanity. In a statement released on Sunday, Obi emphasized that birthdays should be occasions for sober reflection and considering how to dedicate one's life more meaningfully to God and society.

He urged Nigerians to focus on improving the lives of others rather than engaging in lavish celebrations, highlighting that the country's current realities demand greater compassion and collective responsibility. Obi noted that while celebrations might be fitting in societies where basic needs are met and institutions function effectively, Nigeria's significant challenges require citizens to channel resources toward building a better future. He pointed out that despite abundant human and natural resources, millions of Nigerians still face poverty, ill health, unemployment, insecurity, and limited opportunities, underscoring the need for leaders and citizens to prioritize service and life-improving interventions.

This philosophy, he explained, has guided his approach throughout his career in business, the corporate world, and his tenure as governor of Anambra State, where he viewed every opportunity as a chance to make a positive impact. He recalled encouraging individuals and organizations seeking to celebrate him with gifts or elaborate ceremonies to redirect such resources toward projects with lasting benefits, which contributed to establishing schools, hostels, and educational support programs for underprivileged communities.

As part of his birthday activities, Obi attended a Mass of Thanksgiving in Onitsha and later visited St. Raphael's Hospital in Umueri, a rural healthcare facility. There, he donated ₦10 million to support healthcare services. His interactions with patients at the hospital reinforced his belief in the importance of compassionate leadership and supporting vulnerable members of society, stating that leadership should be measured by the ability to care for people, especially those in need.
