Petrobras: Colombian Gas Discoveries Could Supply Nation for a Decade

Brazilian oil giant Petrobras announced that three natural gas reserves discovered in deep waters of the Colombian Caribbean, in partnership with Ecopetrol, are substantial enough to meet Colombia's domestic demand for over a decade and potentially support exports.

Petrobras President Magda Chambriard stated that these reserves have the capacity to fully supply Colombia's needs for ten years and provide surplus for export. She expressed confidence in the project's viability, emphasizing its importance to Colombia, Brazil, Ecopetrol, and Petrobras, and dismissed concerns about potential difficulties due to a change in Colombian government.

Chambriard highlighted that both companies are currently undergoing the necessary public consultations for environmental licenses, and the process is proceeding smoothly. She indicated no reason to doubt the project's development or anticipate any obstacles.

The consortium, operated by Petrobras with a 44.4% stake, confirmed a new natural gas discovery on Monday in the same area as the Sirius and Copoazú fields. The discovery was made through the Sandía-1 exploratory well, located approximately 42 kilometers off the Colombian coast at a depth of 1,285 meters.
