PH loses Negeri Sembilan, key leaders defeated

Pakatan Harapan (PH) has lost its grip on the Negeri Sembilan state government, a significant blow following its victories in the 2018 general election. The coalition, which had held the state since 2018, saw its Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, defeated in Linggi by a margin of 2,976 votes. Harun, who had served two terms as Menteri Besar and never lost an election before, was unseated in Sikamat, a seat he had won four consecutive times since 2008.

Adding to the shock, Anthony Loke, a leader who had not lost an election since 2004, was defeated in Chennah by 688 votes. In the aftermath, Loke announced his resignation as Negeri Sembilan DAP Chairman. Further compounding the crisis, Nurul Izzah Anwar resigned as PKR Deputy President, just a year after taking the position. This series of defeats represents a major setback for PH as it prepares for the 16th General Election, where it will face a united Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.

These losses in Negeri Sembilan echo recent defeats in Johor and Sabah. In Johor, PH lost 48 out of 56 contested seats and the Bukit Batu seat, which it had held since 2013. The emergence of Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama), led by former PKR Deputy President Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, was cited as a factor in these losses. Bersama also contributed to PH's defeat in Perling and nearly cost them the Stulang seat. PH also lost four seats in the Sabah state election. These repeated electoral failures should serve as a wake-up call for PH leaders to regain public confidence and voter support.

The upcoming DAP convention in Putrajaya on August 16 will be closely watched to see if the party intends to remain in the current government until the end of its term. Meanwhile, PKR is set to hold its national congress in Ayer Keroh, Melaka, with a focus on the party's performance and the broader implications of PH's recent electoral defeats.
