Pharmaceutical plant in Pasuruan switches to solar, cutting carbon emissions by 2,326 tons a year

PT Widatra Bhakti has put a 2.2 MWp rooftop solar plant into operation at its pharmaceutical facility in Pasuruan, East Java, making the site part of the company’s push toward a green factory.

The project was developed with PT Surya Nippon Nusantara, a joint venture between SUN Energy and Sojitz Corporation. The solar system is expected to produce about 2,990,007 kWh of clean electricity each year and reduce carbon emissions by as much as 2,326 tons annually.

The company equates that reduction with planting about 38,615 trees a year. Using the roof of the production facility also allows PT Widatra Bhakti to generate renewable power on site without requiring additional land.

Betty Zubaida, the company’s factory director, said renewable energy adoption is becoming increasingly important to industrial competitiveness as supply chains demand greater efficiency, sustainability and environmental standards. She said the company aims to reduce emissions without compromising production reliability or product quality.

PT Widatra Bhakti, an Otsuka Group pharmaceutical company in Indonesia, has set a net-zero target for 2050. It previously purchased renewable energy certificates issued by Indonesia’s state electricity company, PT PLN, in April 2022. The company said combining those certificates with direct renewable generation forms part of its strategy for lower-carbon operations and aligns with government efforts to advance energy transition and green industry in Indonesia.
