Born Philip Walter Foden on May 28, 2000, in Stockport, Greater Manchester, he began his football journey at a young age, eventually joining the academy of his boyhood club, Manchester City.

Foden's association with Manchester City began at the age of eight when he signed with their youth system. His potential was recognized early, leading to his inclusion in the senior squad by then-manager Pep Guardiola for a Champions League match against Celtic on December 6, 2016. He participated in Manchester City's U.S. preseason tour in July 2017, playing in a match against Manchester United.

His official debut for Manchester City came on November 21, 2017, in a Champions League game against Feyenoord, where he came on as a substitute in the 75th minute.
