Philippines Accuses China Coast Guard of Water Cannon Attack Near Disputed Reef

The Philippines has accused the China Coast Guard of deploying a water cannon against a Philippine government vessel near the disputed Scarborough Shoal. This latest confrontation, which occurred on Friday, is the third such incident between the two nations' coast guards this week in the volatile South China Sea.

The incident took place as the Philippines attempted to resupply fishermen in the area. According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the Chinese vessel executed a "reckless" maneuver, coming within seven meters of the BRP Datu Paduhinog and firing a water cannon. The blast reportedly caused a temporary loss of satellite connectivity for the Philippine ship. Two other vessels, the BRP Datu Cabaylo and the BRP Cape San Agustin, were also targeted with water cannons but were not hit.

China's Coast Guard stated that they "lawfully imposed control measures on multiple Philippine vessels engaged in illegal activities in the waters under China's jurisdiction near Huangyan Island." This statement reflects Beijing's expansive claims over the South China Sea, which include the Scarborough Shoal, despite an international tribunal's ruling in 2016 that invalidated these claims.

Amidst these tensions, both China and the Philippines have stated their commitment to completing a Code of Conduct for the South China Sea by the end of the year. However, the recurring confrontations underscore the ongoing challenges in managing maritime disputes in the region.
