British broadcaster Piers Morgan has sharply criticized Lionel Messi's conduct during the World Cup final, particularly his reaction to an incident involving Spanish player Marc Cucurella. Morgan described Messi's actions as "disgusting" and indicative of a "class snitch" behavior.

The controversy stemmed from a moment after a foul by Argentinian player Fernandez, which resulted in a red card. Cucurella approached Messi, and during their brief interaction, touched the lower part of Messi's lip. Messi immediately gestured to the referee, seemingly reporting Cucurella for violating a new rule nicknamed "Vinicius's Law." This rule, introduced during the tournament, aims to prevent insults and unsportsmanlike communication between players by penalizing actions like covering one's mouth during conversation.

However, a red card is not an automatic consequence for such a gesture; it depends on the referee's judgment of whether the communication was aggressive or malicious. In Cucurella's case, the referee apparently did not believe a rule violation had occurred. Social media theories suggested Cucurella might have been trying to indicate an injury to Messi's teammate Pau Cubarsí, rather than engaging in unsportsmanlike conduct.
