Pigozzi family aims for greater support to cultivate Dominican water ski talent

Forty years after arriving in the Dominican Republic as a young Italian sailor, Mario Pigozzi has established his family as a powerhouse in the nation's sports scene, particularly in water skiing. His children have collectively won 10 medals, with Robert, Andrea, and Paolo being prominent figures. Pigozzi, now 56, aims to create a lasting legacy by fostering success for young Dominicans in the sport.

Pigozzi personally finances the artificial lake he built in 2004 and subsidizes the participation costs for over a thousand children at the Catalina Ski Lake in Boca Chica. His family is responsible for 95% of Dominicans practicing the sport, having created the Caribbean's sole competition venue for water skiing. This dedication comes despite the sport's high costs, including imported equipment and expensive boats costing around $180,000.

"Beyond this lake being open to everyone and us covering most of what we charge those in the school, I have done this with my family, but I cannot do it for everyone," Pigozzi told Diario Libre. He, along with his wife Niurkys Perdomo, raised Robert, a Pan American gold medalist, and their triplets. Robert has competed professionally in the U.S., while Andrea aspires to be a commercial pilot, focusing on the ski jumping discipline. Paolo works in analytics for the Yankees, and Francesca is studying marketing with a vision to expand water skiing, inspiring young women.

The Pigozzi family's commitment is crucial for Dominican water skiing, as they provide the only dedicated facility in the region. Their success, marked by numerous medals, highlights their dedication. However, Mario Pigozzi stresses the need for greater support, specifically a fixed budget from the Olympic Committee, to sustain and grow their program, enabling more children to participate and potentially discover their athletic talents.
