Pingtung temples prepare for Ghost Month with appeasement ceremonies

As the Ghost Month (Lunar July) approaches, temples across Pingtung, Taiwan, are gearing up to host a series of appeasement ceremonies. These rituals aim to offer solace to ancestors, resolve karmic debts, and provide peace for infant spirits and animal souls.

The Pingtung Du Cheng Huang Temple will conduct a three-day appeasement ceremony starting August 20th. Meanwhile, Yu Huang Gong and Ci Feng Gong are planning grand appeasement events on the 15th day of the lunar month, August 27th, coinciding with the traditional Zhongyuan Festival.

Other temples are also scheduling their ceremonies at different times to accommodate devotees. For instance, the Gui Lai Ci Tian Gong held a "rewarding the troops" ceremony, offering abundant provisions and incense to the five-camp generals and divine soldiers to thank them for their protection and prepare for the upcoming month.

Devotees can participate in these ceremonies by registering at the temples. Some temples, like Yu Huang Gong, will distribute donated goods to underprivileged families, while others allow participants to collect their own offerings or have them donated for charity. Pingtung Tian Qing Gong has scheduled its appeasement ceremony for the 22nd day of the lunar month and continues to offer spiritual consultations throughout July.
