Pink Floyd Drummer's Iconic McLaren F1 GTR to Auction for Over $35 Million

A legendary McLaren F1 GTR from 1996, once a prized possession of Pink Floyd's drummer and co-founder Nick Mason, is heading to auction, with expectations that it will fetch over $35 million. The car, which was part of Mason's collection for a quarter-century, is considered one of the British marque's most recognizable vehicles due to its distinctive history, configuration, and factory livery.

The auction will take place on August 15 in Monterey, California, as part of RM Sotheby's prestigious event, a key gathering for the international collector car market. While RM Sotheby's has not provided a specific price range, they have indicated the car's value surpasses $35 million, largely attributed to its exceptional provenance. Chassis number 10R holds the distinction of being the first McLaren F1 GTR constructed with the specifications tailored for the 1996 racing season. It is also one of only nine examples built that year and one of two short-tail prototypes initially retained by McLaren.

This particular F1 GTR played a crucial role in McLaren's development of the car for the following season, responding to the emergence of purpose-built race cars like the Porsche 911 GT1. Compared to the 1995 model, the 1996 version featured extended front and rear bodywork, a more aggressive front splitter, and aerodynamic enhancements. The transmission also received upgrades, including a magnesium casing and reinforced internal components, contributing to a reported 38-kilogram weight reduction.

The F1 GTR's racing lineage is significant, with its predecessor, chassis 01R, achieving overall victory at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. This win was particularly remarkable as the F1 was initially designed as a road car, not a racing machine. The F1 GTR's debut at Le Mans saw it not only dominate its class but also secure an overall win, with four cars finishing in the top five. McLaren considers this triumph one of its most unexpected achievements, as the F1 defeated purpose-built prototypes and completed the motorsport Triple Crown for the manufacturer.
