Pirlo defends Russian betting ambassador role, denies political relevance

Andrea Pirlo, the former Italian football star, has broken his silence amid intense criticism over his role as an ambassador for Fonbet, a Russian betting company. Pirlo, who was reportedly set to become the next Italian national team coach, defended his position, asserting that his involvement carries no political significance and that his "love for Italy does not depend on a position."

In an Instagram post, Pirlo stated that he has always conducted his activities in compliance with the laws and contracts of the countries where he has worked. He clarified that his professional collaboration with Fonbet, which has sparked controversy, originated during his coaching tenure in the United Arab Emirates and is strictly commercial and sporting in nature. He emphasized that attributing political meaning to this collaboration would be misinterpreting his beliefs.

Pirlo also expressed gratitude for the support of directors Paolo Maldini and Leonardo. However, Italian media reports suggest that his association with Fonbet, whose major shareholder is Russian oligarch Sergey Lomakin, owner of United FC Dubai (Pirlo's former team), could derail his appointment as the national coach. This development comes after Pep Guardiola reportedly rejected the position. The controversy has led to speculation that Pirlo will not be appointed, with names like Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini now being reconsidered.

Many media outlets interpret Pirlo's social media statement as confirmation that his dream of coaching the Italian national team is over. The situation leaves the Italian Football Federation's Federal Council and its new president, Giovanin Malago, to reconsider their options for the coaching role.
