Plateau Killings: BECO demands justice for two women, calls for probe into security operation

The Berom Educational and Cultural Organisation (BECO) Worldwide is demanding a thorough investigation into the deaths of two women allegedly killed during a security operation in the Gero community of Plateau State, Nigeria. The organization condemned the incident, stating that "enough is enough" regarding the persistent violence and insecurity plaguing the region.

The women were reportedly shot and killed behind the Jos South Local Government Secretariat in Gero on Monday. While the exact circumstances remain unclear, some community members have accused security operatives of being responsible. BECO Worldwide President Da Gyang Dudu Dalyop called for an impartial inquiry, suggesting the deaths may have resulted from poor communication, inadequate community engagement, and the excessive use of force by security personnel.

Dalyop explained that residents of Plateau State have endured years of attacks, making them highly sensitive to the presence of armed personnel. He argued that informing community leaders about the security mission beforehand could have prevented the misunderstanding and potential escalation. "There should have been proper sensitisation and explanation to the community," Dalyop stated, emphasizing the need for better engagement before operations commence.

BECO further questioned the use of force against unarmed civilians, with Dalyop alleging that warning shots were fired before the women were killed. "I do not see any reason why maximum force should be used on women who were not carrying weapons or posing any threat. We believe there was an overuse of power and this must be investigated," he added. The organization urged the Commissioner of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and military authorities to establish the facts surrounding the deaths.

BECO appealed to the government to intensify efforts to combat insecurity in Plateau State, warning that continued violence is fostering frustration among residents who feel they have "had more than enough."
