Platense reaches Copa Libertadores quarterfinals for first time after penalty shootout win

Argentine club Platense has made history by reaching the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals for the first time, overcoming Chilean side Coquimbo Unido in a dramatic penalty shootout. The match, held at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso stadium, ended 0-0 after regulation time, mirroring the first leg's scoreline.

The decisive moment came in the shootout when Platense goalkeeper Juan Pablo Cozzani saved Salvador Cordero's seventh penalty, securing a 7-6 victory for his team and silencing the home crowd. Cozzani's heroics were crucial in a tightly contested match where both teams had chances but failed to convert.

Coquimbo Unido had the better of the first half, with attempts from Cristian Zavala, Sebastián Galani, and Luis Riveros. Guido Vadalá had a clear one-on-one opportunity but was denied by Cozzani's sharp reflexes. Platense also created dangerous moments before halftime, with goalkeeper Diego Sánchez making a crucial save after a defensive error.

The second half saw a dip in pace, with both teams adopting a more cautious approach. Platense, however, managed possession better and threatened Coquimbo's goal with headers from Víctor Cuesta and Kevin Retamar, and a free-kick from Franco Zapiola that was saved.
