Plaza Pentathlón Reforested with Trees and Pollinator Gardens in Roma Sur

The Cuauhtémoc mayor's office has revitalized Plaza Pentathlón in Mexico City's Roma Sur neighborhood, transforming it with the planting of trees and pollinator gardens. The initiative saw the installation of 16 different tree species and five gardens designed to attract pollinators, featuring 300 ornamental plants.

Mayor Alessandra Rojo de la Vega led the reforestation effort, which utilized compost generated from organic waste within the borough. This local production highlights a commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness in urban greening projects.

Rojo de la Vega underscored the significance of the event, stating, "Planting a tree is always important, but today we also plant a decision. The decision that young people will be part of this government and that public spaces will once again be places to build community." This emphasizes a focus on engaging youth in civic action and reclaiming public spaces for social cohesion.

The project also included the construction of permeable sidewalks and the establishment of collection centers for used vegetable oil in public markets, all aimed at increasing green areas. The mayor acknowledged the crucial role of collaborating organizations, including Huerto Roma Verde, Hagamos Composta, Latido Joven, and Fuerza Juvenil Mexicana, along with local residents and young volunteers, in achieving successful outcomes through joint government and societal efforts.
