PoK protests: Thousands march to Muzaffarabad after failed talks; polls delayed in 2 districts

Protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) escalated on Monday as thousands marched towards Muzaffarabad following the breakdown of talks between the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and authorities. Election officials have postponed legislative assembly polls in the Sudhnoti and Rawalakot constituencies until August 10, citing the ongoing unrest.

The JAAC's protest movement has now entered its 52nd day, disrupting public life and casting a shadow over the electoral process. The latest escalation occurred after negotiations between JAAC leaders and the government collapsed on Saturday. Protest organizers accused authorities of refusing to release detained activists, drop criminal cases, or meet the committee's core demands.

The political crisis has unfolded alongside the first phase of polling in 13 constituencies of the Mirpur division. However, political parties have noted that the prolonged demonstrations have severely impacted electioneering.
