Poland Issues Alerts for Heavy Rain, Storms, and Flooding Across 15 Regions

Poland is bracing for a significant deterioration in weather conditions, with alerts issued for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds affecting 15 regions. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has released warnings of levels I and II for storms, intense rainfall, and strong winds across numerous voivodeships (provinces), alongside alerts for rapid increases in river water levels in Lower Silesia.

The national emergency alert system, RCB, has been activated, sending notifications to residents in 15 regions about the impending severe weather. A meeting was held at the Government Centre for Security (RCB) involving the deputy minister of interior and administration, Wiesław Leśniakiewicz, along with regional governors and IMGW representatives. They discussed meteorological and hydrological forecasts concerning the anticipated heavy rainfall and potential flash floods moving in from the southwest.

IMGW has issued its highest level II warnings for severe thunderstorms with heavy rain in parts of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie and Wielkopolskie voivodeships, and for the entire Lower Silesian voivodeship. These warnings are expected to be in effect from late afternoon Friday until Saturday morning. Additionally, level II warnings for intense rainfall are in place for Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Pomorskie, and Warmińsko-Mazurskie voivodeships, where rainfall could reach 60 to 90 mm, lasting until Saturday afternoon.

Storm warnings of level II also apply to parts of the Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Podkarpackie, and Lubelskie voivodeships, as well as the entirety of Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, Łódzkie, Świętokrzyskie, Opolskie, Śląskie, and Małopolskie voivodeships. These areas may experience rainfall up to 55 mm and wind gusts up to 115 km/h, with a risk of hail. Level I warnings for storms are in effect for parts of Lubelskie and Podkarpackie, forecasting rainfall up to 35 mm, wind gusts up to 85 km/h, and possible hail. Warnings for strong winds, including level II alerts in Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, Łódzkie, and Warmińsko-Mazurskie voivodeships, are also active.

In a large part of the country, level 2 weather warnings are in effect for thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds. The RCB Alert has been activated. Services are constantly monitoring the situation and are ready for immediate assistance.
