Poland proposes U.S.-Ukraine-Poland alliance for Patriot missile production

Recent Russian strikes targeting Ukrainian drone and missile component factories, including those operated by a U.S.-Ukrainian company, highlight the urgent need for improved air and missile defense. These attacks, which hit at least five defense facilities and even a Russian missile that briefly entered Polish airspace in July 2026, underscore the vulnerability of Ukraine's industrial base.

In response, Poland has put forward a significant proposal to the United States: an industrial alliance involving Poland, the U.S., and Ukraine for the production of Patriot missile systems. Deputy Minister of National Defense Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka reportedly presented this idea, which aligns with a previous suggestion by Donald Trump to license Patriot production for Ukraine. The timing of Poland's proposal is seen as particularly strategic, coming after Russian attacks aimed at disrupting Ukrainian defense manufacturing.

Dr. Wojciech Warski explains that placing production in Ukraine is currently too risky due to Russian attacks. Poland's proposal, therefore, aims to establish a "win-win-win" situation. Ukraine could gain domestic missile production capabilities within a year. Poland would acquire advanced technological access, which it currently lacks and which has hindered its participation in other defense initiatives. For the U.S., it offers a way to support Ukraine's defense without directly providing certain sensitive technologies, potentially avoiding propaganda pitfalls.

While the proposal has been formally presented, there has been no official response from the Americans yet. Warski suggests that from a political standpoint, such an alliance would be beneficial for all parties involved, addressing immediate security needs and fostering long-term industrial cooperation.
