Pole vaulter Elina Lampela's season over due to ankle injury

Finnish pole vaulter Elina Lampela's season has been cut short by an ankle injury, forcing her withdrawal from the European Championships. The 28-year-old athlete sustained the injury in her final competition before the event, which took place in Germany. This latest setback follows an earlier Achilles tendon issue that troubled Lampela earlier in the season.

The injury occurred during her last competition prior to the European Championships. Lampela's ankle was examined and treated in Birmingham, the host city for the championships. Following the medical assessments, the decision was made that the athlete from Oulun Pyrintö would not compete in the pole vault qualifiers scheduled for Tuesday, nor would she participate in any further events this season.

"Naturally, it's disappointing that the season ends like this and the European Championships will be missed. However, it was the only possible decision in this situation," Lampela stated in a press release. Her best performance of the season was a vault of 4.50 meters. Finland will be represented in the women's pole vault at the European Championships by Wilma Heltelä and Saga Andersson. The championships are set to begin on Monday.
