Police: Aerial Surveillance, Bombardment Key to Counter-terrorism Success

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has emphasized the transformative impact of aerial surveillance and bombardment in its ongoing fight against terrorism, describing these capabilities as significant "game changers." The enhanced use of air assets has demonstrably improved intelligence gathering, enabled precision strikes, and effectively disrupted terrorist activities across the country.

Air power has transformed the way we respond to security threats. Through aerial surveillance and precision bombardment, we have strengthened intelligence gathering, supported ground operations and denied criminal elements the freedom to operate.

In recognition of exceptional service, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, honored 14 police officers for their bravery and gallantry during various operations. These officers were commended for their courage, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to duty, often in the face of grave danger. Some of the honored officers, despite sustaining gunshot wounds, managed to safely maneuver their aircraft, showcasing a profound commitment to their mission.

Speaking at a ceremony for newly promoted officers and those receiving commendations, Martin Nwogoh, Commissioner of Police for the Department of Operations, Police Air Wing, detailed the critical role of the Air Wing. It serves as a vital component of Nigeria’s security architecture, undertaking responsibilities that range from aerial surveillance and intelligence gathering to search and rescue, medical evacuations, logistics support, election security, and counter-insurgency operations. Nwogoh stated, "Air power has transformed the way we respond to security threats."

Our personnel demonstrated extraordinary courage in the face of hostile fire. Even after sustaining gunshot wounds, they safely manoeuvred their aircraft to secure locations, placing duty above personal safety. Their conduct reflects the highest traditions of the Nigeria Police Force.

Nwogoh further elaborated on the courage displayed by the award recipients, noting that some continued their missions under heavy attack. He highlighted their "extraordinary courage in the face of hostile fire" and their ability to prioritize duty above personal safety, even after sustaining injuries. The commendations acknowledged not only combat bravery but also professional and technical competence, including the acquisition of aviation qualifications. The Inspector-General's commitment to merit and operational excellence was underscored by the promotion of professionally qualified officers, who are expected to set high standards for professionalism, discipline, and selfless service.
