Police arrest 20-year-old suspected arms supplier to bandits in Benue

Authorities in Benue State, Nigeria, have apprehended a 20-year-old man suspected of supplying arms to bandits. The suspect, Joro Jarkata, was arrested in the Guma Local Government Area during a proactive operation by the Guma Division police.

A search conducted on him led to the recovery of one hundred and fifteen (115) rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition concealed in his possession.

The arrest occurred on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, when police officers conducting a stop-and-search operation on a motorcycle intercepted two individuals. One suspect managed to escape into nearby bush, but Jarkata, a resident of Awe Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, was apprehended.

The Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, had commended the vigilance, professionalism, and alertness of the operatives whose prompt action led to the recovery.

During a search of the suspect, police recovered 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition concealed on his person. The suspect is currently in police custody, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi for further investigation.

The CP, however, reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms and ammunition and dismantling criminal networks threatening the peace and security of Benue State.

Police are actively working to apprehend the fleeing accomplice and to uncover the source and intended destination of the ammunition. The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the operatives for their vigilance and reiterated the command's commitment to combating the proliferation of illegal firearms and dismantling criminal networks. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
