Police arrest 23-year-old man with loaded firearm in Akwa Ibom

Police in Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom State arrested a 23-year-old man after allegedly finding a loaded locally made shotgun hidden under his clothing, the state command said.

The suspect, identified as Mfon Essien of Ikot Inyang Itak Village in Ikono Local Government Area, was arrested on Sunday, September 6, along Ayah Road off Uyo Road in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. Police said the operation followed credible intelligence received by their operatives.

A search reportedly recovered the locally made shotgun and a live cartridge. Essien remains in police custody as the investigation continues. Investigators are seeking to establish where the firearm came from, why he was carrying it and whether he had links to other people or criminal groups involved in the illegal movement or use of firearms.

State Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare said the command would continue efforts to remove illegal weapons from the streets and prevent violent crime. He warned people involved in the illegal possession or circulation of firearms to stop, saying police would use intelligence-led operations, patrols and other lawful measures.

The command also urged residents to report suspicious people, illegal weapons and criminal activity. Police said informants’ identities would remain confidential and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property across Akwa Ibom State.
