Police arrest seven herdsmen over kidnapped JAMB candidates in Benue

The Benue State Police Command has successfully apprehended seven suspected militia herdsmen responsible for the recent kidnapping of passengers along the Makurdi-Otukpo highway. Among the victims were candidates en route to their Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations. Thankfully, all 18 individuals have been safely recovered, a testament to the diligent work of our security forces.

With the earlier release of five occupants of the vehicle, the remaining 13 were rescued this (Sunday) morning unhurt.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ifeanyi Emenari, briefed Governor Hyacinth Alia on the operation, highlighting the crucial role of the IGP's tactical team in intensifying pressure on the kidnappers, leading to the victims' safe return. While five passengers were released earlier, the remaining 13 were rescued unharmed on Sunday morning.

That is why we were able to mount pressure on the bandits to ensure the victims’ safe return.

Governor Alia, while welcoming the safe return of all passengers, voiced his concern about the escalating kidnapping incidents in the state. He commended the police for the swift arrest of the suspects and urged the JAMB to consider rescheduling the examinations for the affected candidates. The governor assured that the state government would provide necessary support, including medical evaluation and financial aid, to the rescued passengers, reinforcing the administration's zero-tolerance policy towards criminal activities.

We already have eight suspects in our custody, and out of this number, seven are suspected herdsmen bandits connected with the crime. Some of the victims have been able to identify them.
