Police arrest suspect in GH¢1.1m fake gold scam at Berekum

Police in Ghana's Bono Region have arrested a 36-year-old man, Gyamfi Christian, in connection with a significant fake gold scam. The suspect is accused of being part of a group that defrauded a gold aggregator of GH¢1.1 million by selling them fake gold.

Gyamfi Christian was arrested on August 17, 2026, at his hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District.

The victim, 29-year-old Christopher Awuni, reported to the police that four men had presented themselves as gold sellers and sold him 110 troy ounces of what was later discovered to be fake gold in July 2026. The fake gold has since been seized by the police as evidence.

According to a press release from the Bono Regional Police Command, Gyamfi Christian was apprehended on August 17, 2026, at his hideout in Wamfie. During interrogation, he reportedly admitted his involvement in the transaction, which he stated took place in Drobo. He also identified three other individuals allegedly involved: Abraham, known as "Frenchman," who is believed to be the leader, Isaac Antwi, and Balthazar. These three are currently wanted by the police.

During interrogation, he allegedly admitted his involvement in the transaction and told investigators that the deal took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.

Preliminary investigations have also revealed that the same group may have defrauded another victim of GH¢1.4 million in Drobo earlier this year. Gyamfi Christian is in police custody assisting with the investigation as authorities work to apprehend the remaining suspects. The police are urging the public to exercise caution in gold transactions and report any suspicious activities.
