Police arrest two in Cross River for alleged vandalism and theft

Authorities in Cross River State have arrested two individuals suspected of vandalism and theft at the facilities of Akamkpa Quarry Limited, also known as Sterling Global.

The suspects, identified as Kelvin Ignatius, 27, and Arnold Okon, 29, both from Obung Village, were arrested on Thursday. According to a statement from the command’s spokesperson, Eitokpah Sunday, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit apprehended them following intelligence regarding vandals operating near Nsang Junction. Recovered from the suspects were three long iron poles, believed to have been stolen from the quarry.

Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects admitted to stealing the iron poles and implicated themselves in the theft of other company property, including diesel, engine oil, and truck tires. The police are continuing their investigation to recover the remaining stolen items and identify any additional individuals connected to the alleged network of vandals.

These arrests occur amidst a backdrop of other security concerns in the state. Earlier in August, police initiated a manhunt for three suspects following the killing of a cocoa farm worker. Prior to that, the command was investigating the fatal shooting of a farmer and the injury of another. In April, a 26-year-old man was arrested in Calabar for alleged armed robbery, assault, and unlawful firearm possession.

The police are urging residents to continue providing credible information to assist in crime prevention and the protection of public and private facilities. This operation underscores the command's recent efforts to combat violent crime, theft, and property attacks across the state.
