Police find cannabis plantation with about 80 plants in Vilnius district

Lithuanian police found about 80 cannabis plants during a search of a resident’s property in Vilnius district on September 1.

According to police, officers investigating the illegal cultivation of poppies or cannabis discovered greenhouses in the grounds, with additional growing areas in auxiliary buildings and inside the house. They also found cannabis being dried and already dried cannabis, along with cultivation equipment, a smoothbore shotgun, ammunition and other items relevant to the investigation.

After assessing the amount of cannabis found, prosecutors expanded the pretrial investigation to include alleged illegal possession of narcotic or psychotropic substances with the intent to distribute, or possession of a very large quantity of such substances.

Police arrested a person suspected of the offenses. After formal suspicion was issued, the suspect was placed in detention, the strictest available preventive measure. The alleged crimes carry prison sentences of 10 to 15 years. A prosecutor from the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office is organizing and leading the investigation.
