Police foil planned bank robbery at Labone

Ghanaian police successfully thwarted a planned robbery targeting three banks in the Labone area of Accra, resulting in a shootout that left two suspects dead and one in custody. The operation on Thursday morning followed intelligence that a gang was preparing to attack branches of GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank.

According to a police statement, officers were deployed to Labone and located the suspects in two vehicles near the banks. When the suspects attempted to flee, one vehicle sped off, leading to a pursuit and the arrest of Augustine Okechuku Maazi. The occupants of the second vehicle engaged police in a gun battle, during which two suspects were killed.

Authorities recovered two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander and a Hyundai Tucson, along with a blow pistol. Suspect Maazi is assisting police with their investigation, while the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the morgue. The Ghana Police Service commended the swift response and thanked the public for providing crucial information, urging continued cooperation to prevent crime.
