Police Investigate Cause of KN SAR Ramawijaya Ship Fire

An Indonesian search and rescue ship, KN SAR Ramawijaya, caught fire while docked at the Muara Baru Shipyard in North Jakarta on Wednesday evening, July 22, 2026. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 PM local time, produced thick plumes of smoke and prompted a swift response from firefighters.

The Directorate of Water and Air Police (Ditpolairud) of the Polda Metro Jaya is currently investigating the exact cause of the blaze. Ajun Komisaris Besar Ardhie Demastyo, Head of the Enforcement Sub-Directorate at Ditpolairud, stated that investigators are working to determine the precise origin of the fire. The scene has been secured, witnesses are being interviewed, and relevant agencies are coordinating efforts.

Preliminary information gathered by investigators suggests the fire may have started in a crew cabin on the ship's port side. Several workers reported seeing sparks emanating from the area around 7:00 PM while plating work was underway. One worker, identified as Eko, reportedly alerted others to extinguish the flames.

Police discovered welding and grinding equipment in the cabin, indicating repair work was in progress. The work was being carried out under a work order from PT Proskuneo Kadarusman. The foreman, Feri, was not on-site at the time as he was transporting ship plates. He mentioned that repair work typically occurs daily between 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM.

Firefighters deployed 15 units to combat the fire, eventually bringing it under control. Authorities are still assessing the number of potential casualties and the extent of material damage. Investigators plan to thoroughly examine the repair procedures and interview all involved parties to determine if any negligence or legal violations occurred.
